Mt. Superbus Pilgrimage Townsville Hosp. Group 2013 : On 8/9th April 2013A group of 17 people climbed Mount Superbus in S.E. Queensland to commemorate the lives of the six people lost while on board RAAF No. 10 Sqn Lincoln A73-64 while on a mercy flight from Townsville to Eagle Farm at Brisbane on Saturday, 9th April 1955. The following photos were provided by Simon Mitchell and other members of the team. On board were the commanding officer of No. 10 Sqn, WngCdr John Peter Costello MID, Sqn Ldr Charles Surtees Mason, MBE, Sqn Ldr John Watson Finlay and Flt Lt George Stanley Cater. They were accompanied by Nursing Sister Mafalda Stanis Gray and the subject of the mercy flight, new-born Roby Huxley. The aircraft crashed at 0414hrs (EST) with the loss of the lives of all on board. The ascent to the crash site by members of the nursing staff of Townsville Hospital, retired RAAF Air Vice Marshal Alan Reed, his sons and other members of his family as well as my brother, Warwick Finlay, was planned to coincide with the 58th anniversary of the disaster. To accompany a plaque already placed on the remains of the aircraft by Warwick, two of his sons, Scott and Gavin plus our eldest son, Simon, and me at Easter 1988 the Townsville group attached a plaque honouring their nursing comrade. A duplicate plaque which accompanied the group to the mountain was later placed on the grave-sites of the four RAAF officers in Lutwyche cemetery in Brisbane before being taken to Mafalda's own head stone in Townsville Cemetery. That plaque will soon be mounted within Townsville Hospital. These plaques were kindly donated by the Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery of Townsville Hospital. The following is my account of the mercy flight, Warwick and my voyage of remembrance to Mt. Superbus and a subsequent memorial service on the 50th anniversary of the events of Easter 1955. Mercy Flight to Disaster. By Peter Finlay Late in the evening of Good Friday, 8th April 1955, the Commanding Officer of RAAF 10 Squadron (Marine Reconnaissance), Wing Commander John Peter Costello M.I.D. received a telephone call from Dr. Scott-Young, the superintendent of Townsville Hospital requesting that an RAAF aircraft be made available to transport a new born baby to Brisbane for an urgent blood transfusion. The standby aircraft was GAF Lincoln GR 31, A73 64, one of the last of the long nosed versions to be delivered to the RAAF. Wing Commander Costello roused his crew from their homes and they gathered at RAAF Garbutt base to carry out their duties. As crew to the commanding officer, each person was a senior officer in charge of his particular field of operation. The co pilot was Squadron Leader Charles Surtees Mason MBE, the unit's Engineering Officer. He was an experienced Lincoln co pilot and had served with the RAAF in Malaya and had been decorated for bravery in rescuing members of the crew of a crashed aircraft. Number Ten Squadron's signals officer was Fight Lieutenant William George Stanley Cater who was to operate the aircraft's radio equipment on the flight. My father, Squadron Leader John (Jack) Watson Finlay was the Navigation officer of 10 Squadron. He had recently been promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader after completing an advanced navigation course with high graduation marks in England during 1953/4. His task was to file the flight plan and navigate A73 64 to Brisbane, a flight expected to take about 4 hours. He had spent the evening working at home on plans for a forthcoming RAAF exercise and was about to retire for the night when the call came to report for duty. The flight was authorised by Air Commodore P.G.Heffernan, Officer Commanding North Eastern Area. The particular aircraft on standby was Lincoln A73-64 pending the serviceability of other aircraft even though it was reported to be not serviceable for all Search & Rescue tasks due to lack of a serviceable Radar unit and being insufficiently equipped for flight in instrument meteorological conditions and subsequent landing into a civilian airfield which was not equipped with the RAAF's "Ground Control Approach" system. AIRCDRE Heffernan required the crew to take along a civilian nurse or doctor to tend the baby, Andrea Robyn Huxley. Sister Mafalda Stanis Gray had resigned her position at Townsville hospital on the Friday and took the opportunity to travel south to Brisbane while caring for the critically ill child. The aircraft took off normally at 0025 hours and the flight proceeded at relatively low altitude in order to accommodate the requirements of warmth and comfort for the baby. An oxygen bottle was strapped to the aircraft in front of the pilot's position in order to provide her with her needs in the nose of the Lincoln. Poignantly, the duty pilot that evening, Sgt Alan Reed, was advised that his services were not required. As it happened, this saved his life. Alan went on to a distinguished career in the RAAF and rose to the rank of Air Vice Marshall. He was to become a member of the group which climbed Mt. Superbus in 2013. The weather was fine at the beginning of the flight but conditions deteriorated until late in the trip, the Lincoln was flying in cloud. Brisbane air traffic control last heard from the pilot at 0400 hours Eastern Standard Time when he advised that he was landing in 10 minutes. He was given clearance to descend to 5,000 and thence to 4,000 feet. At 0923 hours, a searching RAAF Canberra reported sighting wreckage of a Lincoln in the vicinity of Mount Superbus in south eastern Queensland, almost on the border of NSW. At 0935 hours the Canberra confirmed that the Lincoln was at position 28 0 12'S 152 0 23E on the western slope of the mountain, the highest point in the whole SE Queensland area. Some 5 hours later a ground party of civilians from Emu Vale near Warwick reached the crash site and found that there were no survivors. The sounds of two explosions were heard 10 minutes after the initial crash as the fuel tanks ignited. The Merlin engined aircraft was heavily damaged with the complete section of the fuselage forward of the wings reduced to a molten mass of aluminium. Only the throttle quadrant stood erect with all power levers fully forward, suggesting that the pilot had seen the slope ahead through the cloud and rain. In a vain attempt to lift his aircraft over the last remaining 200 feet of ground, the pilot prevented the nose from concertinering into the slope and the Lincoln "splurged" through the trees, still with enough force at about 180 knots to rip it apart. I was 12 years old at the time of the crash. I lived with our family of my brother Warwick, sister Margaret, mother Mildred and, of course, my father. Our house was in the RAAF officer's "married patch". I remember a Roman Catholic priest walking up to the front gate on Easter Saturday. This was pretty unusual as our family was of the Anglican faith and I suppose I sensed alarm. Mother burst into tears when she was told that Dad's aircraft was missing. We were sent of to "the pictures" in Townsville later in the day. I remembered well for many years that we saw "The Creature from the Black Lagoon". On our return home we learned the news that the Lincoln had been found and that there were no survivors of the crash. Stunned and lonely, I consoled my brother and sister while mother flew to Brisbane for the funeral. I wandered over to the RAAF base and spent long hours talking with a pilot working on a Tiger Moth. He let me sit in the front cockpit while he swung the prop; I'll never forget the thrill as the Gypsy Major burst into life. Similarly, I go all misty eyed when I hear the sound of a Merlin engine in flight as I was brought up to the sound of them powering Lincolns, Mosquitoes and Mustangs from the various RAAF bases at which my father served. It wasn't until 1976 that I yielded to a childhood desire to learn to fly for myself. I had to be content with the mundane Cessnas, Pipers and even a few hours at the controls of Beech Barons and Piper Aerostars rather than in military aircraft, but at least, I was airborne. The Lincoln lay on the slopes of Mount Superbus for many years after the crash. I did not even know where Mount Superbus was other than being generally in the Warwick area. A road trip to Brisbane in 1985 carried me past the general area and started me thinking that I'd like to try to walk to the wreck. I had no knowledge of how much of the Lincoln remained, if it were possible to get to it, how long would it take to find? Did I have enough bush walking experience to tackle such an adventure? Little by little pieces of information came to light. Dad's sister, Winifred, gave me a cutting from the front page of the Brisbane Sunday Mail of 10th April 1955. This featured the crash and a picture which showed the Lincoln remains on Mount Superbus with Wilson's Peak and Mount Lindesay in the background. I read the account of how bush walkers in the area at Easter in 1955 had heard the sound of the aircraft flying low and the subsequent impact in the early hours of the Saturday morning and how they and others had braved flooded creeks to reach the crash site in the vain hope of helping survivors. The first route attempted along Emu Creek proved to have too many flooded sections for even a 4 wheel drive vehicle to negotiate so another attack was launched from the southern side using Killarney Vale as a stepping off point. Although there were logging tracks to the Superbus region, the area was heavily timbered and it was very difficult for the searchers to know where the Lincoln lay. A second RAAF Lincoln, one of two which joined in the search for 64, circled the crashed aircraft to aid the walkers and at 2.24 pm the crew saw the first rescuers reach the crash site after scrambling up muddy, 60o slopes. The ground party found that none of the crew or passengers had survived the crash. Later, a RAAF party of men reached the scene and on the following day, they carried the remains of the occupants down the mountain and on to Brisbane and Townsville for burial. As part of my research into the fatal flight, I was able to obtain a copy of the proceedings of the RAAF Court of Enquiry into the crash of A73 64. This document became available under the Archives Act of 1983 which allows freedom of access to hitherto confidential information after a certain period of time has elapsed (30 years I believe). It is not my intention in this story to try to analyse the report, however there three main points are relevant. The aircraft had several unserviceabilities relating to compass swings and the non availability of radar. The track of the flight was considerably west of that planned and that the aircraft let down through cloud without a descent aid. There were sufficient fuel reserves for the Lincoln to have loitered until daybreak but the needs of the baby may have influenced the decision to continue the approach. How or why these things happened to a crew of the calibre of those on board has baffled RAAF personnel. Perhaps the single greatest contributing factor was the effect that fatigue has on human performance, especially when we remember that this flight was begun just after midnight after a normal day's routine work. The aircraft crashed a little after 0400 hours, the darkest hour before dawn when human biological systems are at their least effective levels. Early in 1988, 1 had reason to travel to Brisbane on business and arranged to spend a weekend with my brother's family. I brought some 1:100,000 scale maps of the Mount Superbus region and by some clever transposition from the photograph published in the Brisbane Sunday Mail mentioned earlier, I was able to draw a line on the map joining the tops of Mount Lindesay, Wilson's Peak and Mount Superbus to give us some idea of the position of the wreck. Meanwhile, my brother, Warwick, had gone one better with the purchase of a 1:25,000 scale map which actually had the exact position of the Lincoln marked. (My estimations were correct to within 100 metres or so). I visited a Brisbane bush walking shop on the Saturday morning before the expedition and brought a copy of a detailed book on walks in SE Queensland. In it I found precise directions to find the Lincoln wreck site from the township of Emu Vale The very helpful proprietor of the shop also told me that an article has appeared recently in the Courier Mail telling of a walk to the Lincoln. I drove eagerly to the offices of the newspaper and eventually purchased a copy published on 24th December 1987 (my birthday). Tearing at the pages of the paper with barely controlled excitement, I found only a story on a walk to a much later light aircraft accident on Mount Glorious. An interesting tale but, sadly, not much help in our quest. On the Sunday morning, Warwick and I, his youngest of three sons, Paul, and one of his 10 year old mates piled into Warwick's 4 wheel drive Nissan Patrol and set off along the Cunningham Highway from Brisbane towards Emu Vale. A little local navigation took us off the main road after 2 hours or so and we moved into the undulating countryside with the ominous mountains approaching. Although this trip was seen as a reconnaissance for a later, better equipped trip, we were filled with a great sense of adventure as we drove along the country roads towards our goal. The Nissan took us past Emu Vale and through several creek crossings with ease before we could drive no further. The old logging road had been rendered unusable by the forestry people to prevent excessive erosion by natural and man made forces. We ate lunch, dressed with light, water repellent clothing and set off up the slopes. Where we left the car there was a sign indicating that the walk to the Lincoln wreck would take 4 hours to return. It seemed just a little strange that while we knew so little of the way to the Lincoln all these years, the local bush walkers had such a large sign to guide them. The climb up the former road was not too difficult even for two 40- 45 year olds. The kids scrambled up the hill easily and I knew that my energy came from the burning desire to find the aircraft. After about 45 minutes, the track became almost level and it was as easy as walking along a made road. We crossed a fresh mountain stream guarded by two freshwater "Yabbies" then strode along, unable to navigate accurately because of the dense sub tropical rain forest canopy. I was leading the party when ahead I saw the unmistakable shape of a V12 Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine. I stopped to wait for Warwick and the boys for I wanted to take a photograph of the expression on their faces when they first saw the engine. Stunned. We walked forward to view this first piece of the Lincoln we had last seen 33 years previously. The engine had been stripped of all removable items including cylinder heads and sump. Only some of the pistons and con-rods remained attached to the crankshaft. The front of the V12 showed that the gearbox bolts were still in place even though the crankshaft was bent downwards about 10o. It was possible to see that two webs of the crankshaft were almost touching. There were no gouge marks to indicate that the supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin 102, turning at some 3,000 RPM and developing 1,750 BHP rotated at all after the impact with the solid granite of Mount Superbus. Where then did all that energy go? I can only surmise that the inertia wrenched the 790Kg engine, gearbox and 13 foot, 4 bladed propeller from their mountings and sent them spinning away from the nacelle. It would appear that this engine has been moved to its present position by people trying to carry it away for a souvenir, for it is nearly a kilometre from the site of the remainder of the wreckage. I did not know at the time that the aircraft lay some 750 metres horizontally and 200 metres vertically from where we stood. We tried to climb straight up the slope above the engine but found the hill too steep and the undergrowth too dense for the small boys to penetrate. The walk to the Lincoln would have to wait for another day. Erroneously, we decided to walk further along the track but only succeeded in descending towards Killarney Vale. At least the exercise showed us the type of country the searchers had traversed so long ago. We retraced our path back to the Merlin, took some photographs in the dim light of the jungle and returned to the Nissan after a 5 hour trek. We were elated at having come so close to finding the Lincoln and determined to plan another trip right to the wreck. Just before we reached the car, we met two chaps on their way to the crash site. One of them told us that he had been to the site previously with a RAAF serviceman and confirmed that the way to the wreck was via a creek near the engine. Warwick and I discussed the plan of attack on the drive home to Brisbane and decided that we would need to move soon to avoid a trip in winter with its attendant shorter days and the risk of colder weather. The Easter school holidays provided the ideal opportunity for the second climb and we made plans to travel with my family to stay with Warwick then. Warwick had obtained further information through friends in the RAAF about the crash of A73 64. One item was a cutting from Airforce News of 1977, which detailed the retrieval of part of the tail-plane of the Lincoln by an RAAF Iroquois helicopter. We had known about this exercise for some time and both of us had made inquiries to several RAAF bases as to the whereabouts of the section. Personnel at the RAAF Museum at Point Cook had emphatically denied any knowledge of such parts, saying that they held only some skin panels and a propeller blade from that particular aircraft. Yet the article said that the parts were retrieved in order that they might be preserved in the Point Cook Museum. Even a trip there in 1986 failed to shed any light on the "missing" parts. Subsequently, the curator of the museum wrote me a letter advising that the tail plane was held in storage for the museum at the Dubbo (NSW) base. At least that part of the mystery was solved. I have since seen and photographed the parts held there. To be better equipped for the return climb to Mount Superbus I brought a pair of sturdy hiking boots with deep treads to help traction on the muddy climbs. A pair of overalls was chosen to ward off the stinging nettles plagued us on the first trip and I packed a bottle of "Stingose" to relieve the irritation of any which succeeded in penetrating our clothing. Warwick, who is a professional TV sound technician, obtained a Video 8 camera to record our climb on tape and also selected his own style of protective clothing. Easter 1988 arrived and we duly drove to Brisbane and were soon swapping Lincoln information which we had both gathered since the first trip. I had been sent a descriptive manual on GAF Lincolns by Alan Charnley of ASTA and this was to prove invaluable later as a source of identification of parts of the crashed aircraft. We boarded the Nissan at 5 am on Easter Saturday and set off to retrace our drive to Emu Vale. This time Warwick and I were accompanied by his two elder sons, Scott and Gavin, as well as my eldest son, Simon. The boys were aged between 14 and 16, the younger children and wives stayed behind as there was not enough room in the car and the walk was considered too hard for them. There had been a lot of rain during the days prior to the trip and we expected to have problems with crossing the many creeks along Emu Creek Road. In fact, the weather was very similar to that which prevailed 33 years ago on the same day. At the first creek crossing we stopped to check the depth of water. Scott was “volunteered” to walk the creek, so we tied a rope around his waist and he waded into the steadily flowing waters. The level came to the edge of his shorts and he continued across safely. Warwick prepared the Nissan by covering the radiator intake with a mat, tying a cord around the viscous coupling of the fan and covered the electrics with a plastic bag. He edged his way across the creek and the Nissan responded beautifully. This procedure was repeated several more times much to the delight of the small boys on board (all 5 of them!). Much of the road was quite muddy and Warwick's skilful handling of the 4 wheel drive had mud flinging from the front wheels. More whoops of glee from the excited crew. The final ascent to the "Lincoln Wreck Walk" sign was quite steep and we growled along in low range. After packing our equipment for the second time in 3 months at this site, we "leach proofed" ourselves with wide cloth tape by strapping our trousers into our boots. Warwick shot off a few metres of video while I said a few words describing the scene. My new boots helped immeasurably on the muddy climb. I was able to walk straight up most of the embankments while the others still had a few problems gaining traction. When we reached the creek crossing on the mountain where we had been accosted by the "Yabbies" (they were still there), we paused to film our efforts at crossing the very flooded creek. The water was really flowing and we had to "rock hop" our way across. The boy's sharp eyes spotted something we had missed on the previous excursion – the 50 mm thick steel, bullet proof plate from the pilot's seat of the Lincoln. It must have been carried this far by souvenir hunters. Further along the track at the Merlin engine, now lying in a torrent of water, we paused again to record some more video before setting off straight up the hill to the east. The climb was difficult on the route we chose. The incline was about 60o, the vegetation fairly thick and tangled and the ground was quite slippery. Several times we stopped to gain our bearings and to catch our breath. At one stage I felt a little light headed and almost overbalanced. I am reasonably fit but the combination of zero horizon due to cloud, the steep slope, fogged spectacles and 4,000 foot altitude combined to disorient me somewhat for a while. I noticed that the young lads also stopped several times to draw breath so I didn't feel too perturbed. Eventually, after about an hour's climb, the jungle cleared as the slope changed for level ground. Again we paused to try to orientate ourselves. The compass needle showed that North was behind us from the direction we had started and I had some trouble rotating my mind. We walked straight ahead for a short time until Warwick echoed all our sentiments that we might become lost and still not find our goal. We retraced our steps to a known position and decided to carry out a search 90o either side of our former path. Warwick stayed in the centre while I walked left. Scott, Gavin and Simon walked to the right. We kept within hailing distance and I found little other than some bushwalker's trail marks and the odd blaze on a tree. As I began my return to Warwick's position I could hear him hailing the boys. "Something's up." I thought. "Yes." He called, "They've found a campsite and some bits of aluminium cowling. They've found a track.. like Pitt Street." I joined Warwick to walk to a point where we rounded a corner in the track and came face to face with the gaping front end of the broken fuselage of the Lincoln. I followed the boys to the remains of the aircraft while Warwick shot off some photographic atmospherics of the bush scene. My friends have since asked me if the trip to the Lincoln was very emotional for me. I felt almost nothing when coming face to face with the aircraft I had last seen intact at Townsville's Garbutt RAAF Base so long ago. Dad used to take us for visits to the field on open days and we had climbed into various Lincolns. They used to be parked near to the officer's Mess like almost silent sentinels in readiness. Vast monsters to a 12 year old, serving the nation as watchdogs in their maritime search and rescue role. I said almost silent for, even as they sat waiting patiently, their systems were kept at a slow heart beat by auxiliary motors which pressurised their pneumatic accumulators. Now A73 64 sat shattered and lifeless, still foreign amongst the entwining vines of the rainforest. We wandered around. The boys were excited, Warwick told Simon, who was slipping and sliding all over the place, that the aircraft wasn't going to go away now having been here for 33 years. The fuselage is reasonably intact from the flapjack rearwards. It still retains its cross sectional shape and is unburned. Yet a mattress, lying at the forward open end has pieces of molten aluminium moulded around its exposed wires. It appears that ground staff had slept on the aircraft at Townsville while working to make it serviceable as the duty aircraft. The RAAF roundel is still visible on the starboard side and the silver lacquer still covers the aircraft's aluminium skin. Inside, the airframe is protected by green anti oxidant paint. The names of many bush walkers are tattooed onto almost every square inch of available space and the surrounding countryside shows that many people have been there over the years. The main spar is ahead of the remaining fuselage, cut through by souvenir hunters. Because of the fires which raged through the forward part of the aircraft after the impact, little remains of the cockpit. Yet I picked up an 18 inch section of the frame which made up the windscreen and Perspex cockpit assembly. A charred radio here, bent and twisted oleo legs there litter the area. The bomb bay doors, about in their correct relative positions, seem miraculously undamaged and could be carried away by if one had the desire or equipment to lift them. To the left, facing down the hill in the direction the aircraft had come from, lays the starboard inner wing. On the top is the exposed fuel tank, its outer covering burned away, yet the undersides virtually undamaged despite the fearsome heat of the fires. Underneath this part of the wing is the starboard flap. This is very much in the down position and resting against a rock. Despite the fact that the crash report indicates that the flaps were up at the time of impact, I imagine that the force of the wing breaking away from the control tubes must have allowed the flap to fall. Further away lays a substantial portion of the same wing. Although damaged, it is one of the larger sections of aircraft remaining at the site. In the same area are two tubular steel engine frames, now rusted and very twisted, embracing the trees which felled the Lincoln and stripped them of their charges. Further down the hill I spied the unmistakeable shape of the extreme rear of the fuselage where the Boulton Paul gun turret was mounted. The turret itself now lies in the RAAF store at Dubbo (NSW) having been removed along with the tail surfaces in 1977. The tail plane actually twisted itself free during the impact and landed on top of the main fuselage and contained the only part considered to be salvageable by the crash analysis team, the tail wheel and tyre. Simon picked up a fairly large section of the rear fuselage which contained a door frame. The paint work was immaculate and still bore a dashed red line stencilled upon it. We were later able to identify this as the area of the rear crew door and the red line indicated the external access to the first aid box. None of the engines was seen at the crash site. We understand that one is on display at the Darling Downs air Museum at Oakey and we know that one other is at the foot of the final climb. As it happens, we later found a third engine sitting in the creek quite some distance from the main site where it, too, has been moved by would-be collectors. After our walk around and the shooting of some colour 35mm film for prints we assembled in the main fuselage section to mount a plaque which I had had made. We chose a spot in the mid upper gun turret opening and drilled holes for "pop" rivets with a portable electric drill I had carried for this purpose. We took some stills and video of the operation and I said a few words to dedicate the plaque. The brass plate bears the inscription: " Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth ..... In honour of Sqn.Ldr. J.W.Finlay RAAF. Warwick and Peter visited this site Easter 1988." I recited the whole poem and said how proud I was that we had chosen to make the trip. It was hard to say the words for the floods of emotion kept sweeping over me. This was, to me, the purpose for which we had been guided to this place and I was glad that we had achieved our goal. We gathered up a few parts of the aircraft, Warwick treasured a section of aluminium with part of a roundel still upon it and Simon determined to carry the 1 metre square section of rear fuselage down the mountain with him. Not desecration of the site, just loving memory. In time there will be nothing left on Mount Superbus. We paused to read a brass plaque which has been re affixed to a rock by the Ipswich Venturer Scouts in 1974 to replace the original which had been stolen. Our descent was by way of a well marked creek which provided a rather easier path than our upwards route. On the way we found many parts of the Lincoln. A supercharger from one of the Merlins looked very tempting but it was far too heavy to carry so we left it in place. The boys were forced to allow Simon's fuselage section to free fall much of the way and many times Scott tried to dissuade Simon from carrying it further. To his credit, Simon refused to be swayed in his determination and I nodded with satisfaction at his will. About half way down the creek, we came across the second Merlin mentioned earlier. It, too, has been stripped of the cylinder heads and sump. This one is not structurally- damaged like the first we found.... probably a starboard engine, the other probably a port unit which may have borne the brunt of the initial impact. After a very wet hour of climbing down through the running creek, we came to the old road at a point just south of the first Merlin. From here we made our way along the track to the Nissan, Simon finally allowing me to help him with his prize. Lovely to be with my son. Back at the Nissan we changed out of our wet clothing. We ate some nourishing food packed by our ever thoughtful wives and headed towards home through the flooded creeks again. The trip was punctuated with rounds of boy's jokes as we came down from the "high" we had all experienced. Home at last at about 10 pm; we were able to tell of our exploits with the aid of an instant video of the trip. On the following day we completed our pilgrimage by visiting the lawn graves in Lutwych cemetery in Brisbane. The graves of my father as well as John Costello, Charles Mason and William Cater lie here in a row. The mortal remains of the two civilians killed in the crash were to be returned to Townsville for burial. However, several events were to ensue before they were to rest. A Lincoln (piloted by John Laming and co-piloted by Alan Reed) was despatched from Townsville to bring the caskets from Brisbane. When the Lincoln was started for the return journey, the booster pumps were inadvertently switched on, flooding the engines and preventing start up. Several hours were lost attempting to cure this problem. When the aircraft eventually taxied out for a second attempt to take off, the G3 compass spun erratically and would not stabilise. With bad weather forecast, the crew did not want to risk a second accident. Since no replacement Lincoln was available from Amberley, the coffins were transferred to a Butler Airlines DC 3 which was due to leave at midnight. This aircraft also suffered an engine malfunction during run up and had to return to the terminal. Finally, in the early hours of the morning of the funeral the caskets were loaded onto an Ansett DC3 which eventually arrived at Townsville, it, too, having suffered complete HF/VHF radio failure during the flight. When the crew of the Lincoln attempted to return to Townsville on the following day, the aircraft performed normally and the seven members flew safely back, wondering at the string of coincidences which had conspired to follow certain souls. The remains of A73 64 constitute the bulk of Lincoln parts still in existence in Australia. Only the cockpit section of A73 27 is preserved at the Camden Air Museum. THORNLEIGH ZIG ZAG : I followed the route of the Thornleigh Zig-Zag Railway on a Saturday morning in June 2012. This was the third and last of the zig-zag railways built in NSW (after Lapstone and Lithgow). The Thornleigh Zig Zag was constructed in 1883 by railway contractors, Amos & Co, as a branch line which lead off the main northern railway line just beside Thornleigh Station and descended to a quarry about 35 metres below. The quarry supplied "stone ballast" (white metal - metamorphosed sandstone) for the southern section of the Homebush (Sydney ) to Waratah (Newcastle) railway line [Historic Engineering Marker 2006, Thornleigh Quarry]. The zig-zag facilitated an easier gradient to and from the Quarry for the engines which powered the railway trucks carrying the stone to the top. It did this by traversing from the main rail line to the "top points" where the train reversed down the middle road to "bottom points". It is possible that the modern children's playground is the location of this feature. From there the lower road travelled along the course of Zig Zag Creek and some of the old lower road bed is visible. While much of the route of the Zig-Zag Railway has today been taken over by houses, I was able to follow the descent from Pritchard and Wells Streets to the " bottom points" neat Janet Street. Then, entering the bush from a track off Morgan Street and crossing a wooden bridge, I came to Zig-Zag Creek where there is ample evidence of the old road bed. On a later occasion I plane to walk along the overgrown track to the quarry from this point. The quarry is quite extensive and makes a lovely picnic spot. There are several metal inscription plaques located in the quarry area.

LAPSTONE ZIG ZAG RAILWAY WALK : Lapstone Zig Zag Railway. When it was opened in 1867, the Zig Zag was the first rail route to ascend Lapstone Hill and it allowed railway access to the Blue Mountains communities as far as Wentworth Falls. Lapstone Zig Zag was a major engineering feat and included the huge Knapsack Viaduct. It was the first Zig Zag built in Australia. The line was constructed in 3 sections, a top road, a middle road and a bottom road. Trains using the Zig Zag had to be short enough to fit between the points and the dead-end tracks. Trains always reversed up or down the middle road. Most of the rail-bed is still intact and it is quite an easy walk. The remains of Lucasville Station (1878) on the top road can still be seen. There are excellent views of Knapsack Viaduct from the Siding lookout near the top road dead end. Walking tracks are well sign posted. As in the case of the road, various routes have been adopted over the years. British engineer John Whitton wanted to tunnel through the hill. A tight budget prevented this, so a Zig Zag railway was constructed. Gradients ranged from 1 in 30 to 1 in 33. The Zig Zag was bypassed in 1892, when the Old Glenbrook Tunnel was opened. The tunnel cost £37,000 and used an ogee curve with a radius of 12 chains. The grade of 1:33 caused many problems with lack of traction on the wet tracks. The present route, through Glenbrook Gorge, opened in 1912 and was completed with double tracks in 1913. The new tunnel has a grade of 1:60 and is 14 chains in length. Its radius is also 14 chains. (1 chain is the length of a cricket pitch). The first route involved the building of the impressive sandstone viaduct over Knapsack Gully. The viaduct was the largest in Australia, being 388 feet long and 120 ft high with 5 spans of 55 ft and 2 of 20 ft. Construction commenced in 1863. The line was opened to Weatherboard (now Wentworth Falls) on July 13, 1867. A second, more spectacular Zig Zag was constructed on the western escarpment. Known as the Lithgow Zig Zag, it is now in use as a tourist railway. (Hopefully to be re-opened shortly after a hiatus). Originally built to carry a single railway track, Knapsack bridge was fitted in 1926 with a new concrete deck, enabling it to carry two lanes of road traffic. It formed part of the Great Western Highway until being by-passed in the mid 1990's. Today it is used only by pedestrians, bicycles, emergency vehicles and the Olympic Torch Relay. Beyond the Zig Zag the line followed what is now the highway, from a point just beyond Knapsack Street near the entrance to RAAF Home Command. Glenbrook railway station was in the park roughly opposite the Tourist Information Centre. The line continued along today's highway, swinging off to the north near Grahame Street (formerly Wascoe Siding) Blaxland. Knapsack Viaduct is signposted from the motorway (Emu Plains exit). From the car-park near the junction of the old highway and historic Mitchell's Pass, a footpath follows the old railway and highway route to the viaduct. From here, a path descends below the stone arches then ascends to Elizabeth Lookout. Alternately, follow the stairs up to the old Zig Zag railway formation at Top Points and Lucasville Platform. From here, follow the Zig Zag's upper road to Knapsack Street, or the middle road down to Knapsack Quarry and the tunnel under the highway. Continue south to Skarratt Park and the Bottom Points location. It is possible to walk along this path and view the rail-bed which leads to the Old Glenbrook Tunnel. Alternatively, the walking tracks may be accessed from the end of Knapsack Street in Glenbrook where the rail line crossed the old Cox's Road. MGCC NSW MGF-TF REGISTER : MGF Coil Spring Conversion. Peter Finlay A delightful little car in most respects, our MGF Trophy 160 rode like a billycart. My friend from Newcastle, Lyall Clarke, told me that the harsh ride of this model was due to the 16" low profile tyres but a sagging left hand side suggested that one or both of the Hydragas cylinders had leaked their nitrogen suspension medium and had caused that side to drop to give a very über lowered appearance. New Trophy 160 rear bellows are offered on EBay for $A695 plus $115 for a 5 litre container of "Dragon's Blood"- ethylene glycol and water - with which to recharge the system. Plus $65 to have the suspension refilled and re-pressurised. So that would have been $875 just to fix one side of the car. Where was I going to source a front unit was the second question. And you can bet that the other side would have died soon after, about doubling the cost. An email to Dean Goddard ( dean@ukmgparts.com ) at Brown and Gammons in England revealed that they could supply a coil spring and non-adjustable damper conversion- BGF 7004- for £662 plus £125 freight. Total $A1193 plus GST equals $1312. Two disadvantages would have been: 1. The coil springs are contained in sealed canisters preventing replacement or up-rating of the spring down the track and 2. The dampers were non-adjustable. The obvious solution became readily apparent, to buy the Australian ensemble developed by Stuart Ratcliffe at The MG Centre of Sydney in conjunction with Murray Coote (former Australian rally champion) of MCA Suspension. I had seen this set up displayed at the 2011 MGCC Concours day and during visits to Stuart and Sally's workshop at Granville where the car had been taken in a vain attempt to restore the car's ride height recently. I bit the bullet for the $1760 including GST for a complete kit which included adjustable Gaz dampers and elected to do the installation at home. Surveying several websites on the subject (http://www.the-t-bar.com/en/forum/54-how-tos/29848-fitting-mgf-coil-conversion-kit-aus-version) and a DVD of the workshop manual armed me with the general idea of the task. That plus the explicit instructions supplied with the kit was enough to give me the confidence to proceed. In hindsight it might have been easier on this ageing body to have commissioned to Stuart in order ro save a day and a half grovelling around on the garage floor. If nothing else I now know how to do the job. After setting the car on stands and removing the wheels, I elected to start at the nearside front as it seemed slightly easier to get at the components than at the rear. The plastic wheel arch liner was removed. Tip: if you plan to do this exercise yourself make sure you have a supply of replacement scrivets and a powerful impact wrench on hand. The plastic scrivets become distorted with age (like me) and tend to have a mind of their own when the time comes to replacing them. The impact wrench is an essential item for persuading the idiotically-designed top damper nuts to release. On this subject it might be as well to apply a liberal amount of WD-40 for a week or so to each of them before tackling the job. Despite warnings of dire consequences I carefully released the 400 psi pressure of the Hydragas system on the nearside by pressing in the pin of the Schrader valve located in the front compartment of the MG. A rag over the valve persuaded the luminous green fluid to drain into a bucket without coating the car and me. Yes, I wore safety glasses. That done I was free to demount the front cylinder. Along with the fluid line, four bolts, two of which are retained by nuts, were undone and the cover plate was removed. Prior to starting the job I just happened to have a spare set of these plates which came to me in a bulk lot of MGF spares. A slot to enable adjustment of the ride height was cut into each of these plates and a dab of paint protected the raw edges made by the hacksaw and grinder. Neat. The new "top hat" spring retainer, stylishly turned from a billet of aluminium, was fitted into the locating plate. I noted that the front springs are longer and wound from a slimmer wire than the rears. The adjuster, consisting of a spring base plate and threaded section, was fitted over the pivot joint. The opportunity to lubricate this pivot was taken and a liberal coating of camshaft installation grease, supplied with the kit, was applied to the threads and spring base to ease the pre-tensioning and adjustment of the spring under partial load. I set up the gap between the spring base plate and the threaded section at the recommended 14mm with a vernier caliper so that the pre-load achieves the desired ride height. Two screwdrivers, with their ends removed, are supplied with the kit and these are used to rotate the spring base plate components. I did this before the cover was refitted but Stuart warns that this could result in "having a face full of spring". Point taken. Then the cover was refitted and I tackled the job of removing the top mount of the damper. This is where the fun started. Despite my careful preparation of the nut with WD-40, it proved annoyingly recalcitrant. The puny flats on the end of the damper rod were hopelessly inadequate. They allowed the 7 mm open-ended spanner to round them off all too easily when some limited force was applied to retaining nut with a spanner awkwardly applied in the limited space. No joy. So out came the big gun. Gaye slipped down to Coates at Auburn and hired a 3/4" drive 240 volt hammer driver with a stout 14 mm socket. Zip, zip the nut was released, the damper slid out and the new unit, set to 10 clicks was installed. At least it looked pretty. Now onto the rear. I removed the fibre closing panel and the engine bay access panel (a task in itself) as the spring unit has to be lifted up to removed from this corner. All went well until the impact wrench proved rather too enthusiastic for the damper top nut which promptly stripped. Some dreadful butchery followed using an angle grinder to remove the top of the damper shaft. I took care to relocate the nearby petrol supply line and to stop up the holes so that the petrol would not be ignited by the sparks which were soon to fly. What I didn't do was separate the O2 sensor leads and I paid for my omission by managing to partly sever the plastic connector and one of the wires. Dumb. Fortunately, I was able to recover from this act of stupidity by soldering up a jumper wire. The debris was blown out with a compressed air and I fitted the new damper. By now I was getting smart and had no difficulty replacing the units on the offside. The front was the most accessible and everything just jumped into place. With the MG back on her wheels a quick ride height check was performed and I found that three corners were at the required 350 mm measured from wheel centre to mudguard edge. The right rear was 5 mm lower. A run around the block showed a pleasing improvement in ride, even as I drove over the first bump at the end of the driveway. The ride height was still too low so I popped off the wheel and turned the spring adjuster up by 5 holes. Bingo, it was just the right amount and a rule of thumb suggests that moving the adjuster by one hole moves the ride height by 1 mm. Even with a limited amount of local driving the improvement in ride is outstanding. Some road trials indicated that 10 clicks on the adjuster for the dampers was a bit too soft so I ran them up to full hard. This was too severe so I backed them off by 10 clicks and the ride is very good now. Anyone need a used pair of Trophy160 Hydragas units complete with pressure lines?

Contained in a hand-written book by Mrs. Ward, wife of Ron Ward, MG importer. 20 years under "restoration" with several owners, finally making some progress. In fifteen months I have: Rebuilt the engine, rear axle, front axle, stripped the chassis and commissioned the fitting of a new nearside main channel. I have built the body tub and frame to the point shown here. The engine was built with new pistons to suit, with balanced rotating and reciprocating components. The head has TF valves with suitable porting and matching of manifolds. A pair of new 1 1/4" SUs has been sourced from Midel. A pair of new half shafts were fitted with new hubs and modern lip seals along with sealed bearings. A 4.55:1 BMC A type diff has been modified to fit the TC banjo housing. The front axle has been checked for alignment and fitted with new king pins and bushes. The stub axles, prone to cracking, have been replaced by David Mawer Engineering. Target for a potentially drivable chassis was August 2008. This was achieved on 2nd August 2008 with a successful engine start and trial run on the trolley through the gears. Eureka! Scheduled for lowering to the floor tomorrow after another engine run up tonight. The run up was OK and the car was lowered to the garage floor on Saturday. Standing on four 19" wheels for the first time in over 25 years. Today (20.8.08) the "tub" was mounted to the frame for a test fit prior to removal for painting. The tub, bulkhead, toe board and various brackets were delivered to Gosford today for final finishing and painting. The rolling chassis was exhibited at the All-British Car Day at The Kings School in August 2008 and then at the MG Car Club (NSW) annual Concours d'Elegance in November 2008. The first place award in the ZZ category was given. With the bodywork well advanced, all things being equal, the car could be ready for assembly of the tub onto the frame by the end of 2008. Originally made with Clipper Blue paint and beige upholstery, TC 7346 Mid May 2009 and the tub is still at Gosford but now close to having the finish coats of paint applied. The latest forecast for completion of the painted tub is the end of July 2009. This is now definitely planned for the week 20-24th July. Much reference to Mike Sherrell's tome: "TCs Forever." The body is in Gosford being prepared for painting. When this is done it will be fitted to the chassis and trimmed. The instrument panel is complete and will be installed. With the firewall fitted with the main tub, then the fuel pump and lines, coil, oil pressure line, accelerator linkage, steering column support, toe board and floor boards will go in. The side-screen frames and hood bows have been powder-coated in a subtle beige colour and the fabric covers with transparencies were sourced through E-Bay at a good price. The hood and 1/2 tonneau are on order from Moss Motors along with the fitting kit for the screens plus new fuel tank side panels. Both have since arrived. The fuel tank sides fitted well. A kit of TC side screen trims was supplied by Doug Pelton's "Fromtheframeup" organization in the USA. These have been cut to size and mitred using a metal-cutting blade on a table saw. The fitting of the canvas and transparencies to the frames will be done when the hood and screens have been offered to the completed body. Sunday, July 26 2009. The body has been painted in 2-pack "baked enamel" and looks fantastic thanks to Ron who worked night and day to complete this part of the job. Next weekend sees the final fitting of the tub to the frame and assembly of the interior components. Assembly of the components into the body tub has progressed well. All electrical items are connected and tested OK. The dash is complete and the engine fired easily 13.8.09. I drove the car for a short distance up the street last night (26th August 2009) to load her up to drive to The Kings School All British Car Club's display day today. I took the opportunity to have another shake-down run on the oval before anyone else arrived. Gaye and I drove around the display at the end. Further progress. The springs have been re-fitted and the car now sits perfectly level. The screen has been replaced with new glass with the lower frame bent to the correct shape. A new master cylinder has been fitted as the original did not have the correct holes in the cylinder. The hood bows are presently being set up ready for Garry to attach the Moss Stayfast covering. The beading for the upholstery did not sit against the body correctly in several places. To cure this I removed the nails which attached some of the metal panels and attached them through the beading where they cannot be seen. Much better now. The seat back has been re-shaped to fit over the transmission tunnel and it now sits lower in the car. September 18 and the final stages of preparation and assembly are approaching. The guards are with Ron at Gosford and, along with the front valence and running boards should be finished shortly. Ron advises that the radiator shell is in Albury for plating. The engine hood (bonnet) is yet to be checked for fit and this will be done when the car goes to Gosford for the hand burnishing of the paint now that it has cured. Today I scored a complete set of engine hood (bonnet) panels in far better condition than mine. This set will be much easier to refinish and the old set will be sold on EBay. The car is with Garry having the soft top fitted and some re-working of the seat back to give a little more room for the occupants. On Saturday, 7th November 2009 Ron and I trimmed the new bonnet and sides to it the body. The panels are now being prepared for painting. Ron is working on the rear guards and these, along with the front valence and running boards will be the next items to be painted. This will leave the front guards and bonnet as the final parts for paint. Sometime in January looks possible for a completion date. The car will be entered in the Concours d'Elegance of the MG Car Club (Newcastle) on Sunday 29th November 2009. As there were insufficient entries in the "Under restoration" category the car was placed amongst the completed cars for assessment. Naturally, being in an unfinished state, she was placed 4th behind two delightful TCs and an equally spirited MGY saloon. Much information was given on points of originality and steps have been taken to correct these. The majority of the external panels have been "trial fitted" in primer... just waiting now for the nearside front guard and running board to be painted in primer. (3.4.10). When this is done the panels will be removed for final painting, assembly and registration. Is it too much to expect that the end of April will see the project on the road? Yes, the end of April has passed but there has been good progress. With all the panels fitted in primer we went to a weigh bridge and then on to an engineer for the "blue slip" technical inspection. The TC could actually be registered but that is pointless at the moment until the parts come back from the painters. Is June too early to predict that we will see the completion of this project? A supercharger kit has been obtained. This is based on the modern Roots-type blower as fitted to Toyota MR2s. A 2" HD8 SU carburettor will supply the mixture. The final body parts are set to be painted this week and will be assembled onto the car during the first week of August 2010. Yes! I fitted the nearside rear guard, both running boards and put the nearside front guard loosely in position today (4th August). Saturday should see the remaining panels fitted so I can bring the car home to complete final assembly. Looking great. Friday 13th August 2010 we went for our first formal drive around the streets of Kingsdene today. All well. Saturday 14th Gaye and I drove to Dom and Jane's place at Kenthurst. Again, all went very well. The TC rides acceptably well except for the harsher bumps. Performance is very reasonable and the engine is mechanically quiet with a pleasing exhaust burble. It is easy to see why new cars are driven so quickly as the MG lopes along at the posted speed limits with no real desire to go any faster. Even with the Datsun steering box the directional control is vague. The brake are heavy and adequate. The gearbox works slickly on the changes from second to third and fourth. First gear has the usual gear noise consistent with a non-constant mesh gear set. My skills at double de-clutching back to first and from first to second are being honed. Heel and toe downshifting is easy but the roller accelerator pedal will need the organ-type flap to be added to ease foot comfort. The lack of a place to rest the left foot anywhere but on the clutch pedal is irritating. Overall I am delighted with the outcome. Some fine tuning to paint and some rattles will be easily fixed. I collected the wheels from Ron today after he sprayed them with the same shade of metallic silver in which they were obtained. He used silver base coat and two coats of 2-pack clear. The effect is stunning. 10.10.10. The car was displayed at the 1st Sydney Concours d'Elegance at the former St.Patrick's College at Manly. 28.11.10. MG CC (Newcastle) Concours d'Elegance. Second place. 30.12.10: Now that the silly season of Concours judging and display has concluded (I believe I am "over" that affliction) I have installed a Toyota SC12 supercharger with a kit supplied by Gill Taylor in Victoria. A 2" SU HD8 administers the mixtureto yield 10 psi boost. Some aggravation with needles has been experienced but I am well on the way to sorting this issue with help from David Ogg of the "Renegades" group in Victoria who runs a blown TC. Thanks David. A pleasant run to Parramatta Park this evening to take some photos in the warm light was quite enjoyable despite fouling a plug due to the mixture being too rich. I have now changed from a UVK needle to a UVH and suspect I will end up with a UVF or even leaner. As it turned out a modifield UF needle did the trick. A dyno run will define the correct needle and distributor advance curve.. For the 2011 MG Nationals the car will be entered as a "Pre-MGA Special". Thus it should present well in the Concours section as well as being competitive in the Motorkhana and Hillclimb at Ringwood. I have held the outright record on this 500 metre course and won several rounds of the NSW State Hillclimb Championship in the supercharged Mawer single-seater so, hopefully, I will not have forgotten which way to go. 26.4.11. The 2011 Nationals went reasonbly well. We took second place in the Concours d'Elegance behind a beautifully-restored MGTD entered by Chris Murray from the Gold Coast chapter. In the Hillclimb I had fun competing against the family team of Mike and Kay Herlihy in their TC to take second behind Mike. In the Motorkhana, Mike and I were both floored by Kay's precise driving to take second and third placings respectively. Much fun and hillarity. Mike is the President of the MG CC Victoria. I won the "Computer enhanced" division of the photographic competition but the 3801 Rocker Racer project did not progress further than the first heat. I had the honour to be one of the judges of the TC class in the Concours in the esteemed company of Leon Norsworthy from Victoria and Paul Plummer the Overseas Director of The MG Car Club UK. I took Paul for a drive in the TC around Newcastle to show him the King Edward Park Hillclimb venue. June 2011. The supercharger has been removed and the kit was sold to a chap in WA. While the loss of performance is noticeable but the TC still pulls very well and far better than a standard engined-car up the steepest hills. A blue 2002 MGF Trophy 160 has been bought to replace the Falcon Station Wagon and is bto be used a s a daily driver. It now bears the HN 681 plates while the TC is on Historic registration.

Sadly, today I have to record the death of my dear friend Martin Robson in the crash of the Bushby Midget Mustang featured in this galley. Martin bravely attempted to steer the aircraft away from crowds on nearby Mornington beach on Port Phillip Bay on Sunday, 11th January 2009.

Lord Howe Island : A week staying at Pinetrees on Lord Howe Island provided a wonderful opportunity to explore Paradise and to take many images. Great food, lovely staff, wonderful friends and fantastic Jazz from "Fireworks" combined to make this memorable holiday. Six of these images won awards at Northside Creative Photography Club's "Land and Seascape" competition on 5.4.06.

Kurnell Catamaran Club 5.2.06 : Kurnell is located on the southern shore of Botany Bay just south of Sydney. Aircraft from Kingsford Smith International fly overhead which just adds to the attraction of this beautiful waterway. Winds of 10-20 knots fill in from the north east on most summer days while the water stays relatively flat providing fantastic sailing conditions. Cats sailed include the full range of Nacras, local Windrushes and Maricats, Taipans and Capricorns. The international class Tornados are fast, too. Not may Hobies these days but a few F18s are sailed in the fleet from time to time. I used to sail a Nacra 5.0 about 13 years ago and have enjoyed meeting many old friends while shooting the boats.
